At this point the Payes started paying for Alexia's and Simone's schooling. The cost for each girl is $25 a month year-round. They have paid in excess of $2000 for their schooling so far.
A popular catch phrase today is “it’s not personal, it’s business.” And the adoption industry is a business. But it’s very personal to the people who want to adopt . . . and to the children who need to be adopted. Every other day you seem to hear of a celebrity who, in a matter of weeks, has been able to adopt a child from another country with very little trouble. Whether this is because of their celebrity status or the fact that it is not hard for them financially speaking, it is hard to say. But if you’re not a celebrity with great financial backing, then inter-country adopting can be a very difficult and drawn out process. This is the story of one such couple from Indiana who is attempting to adopt two girls from Jamaica. Their struggle began over two years ago and continues today. We can only hope that by gaining support and publicity through word-of-mouth, not only will their case be heard and impacted . . . . but that adoption and immigration may become as personal for those industries as it is for all those other people out there wanting to have a family through inter-country adoption.
